As a regulated healthcare profession, the practice of pharmacy and its professionals are governed by provincial and federal legislation.
The Pharmacy Act, 2024 establishes the College of Pharmacy of Newfoundland and Labrador as the regulatory body for pharmacy in the province. The Act and accompanying regulations and by-laws provide a framework for the College to regulate the profession in the public’s best interest. The College is also given the authority to establish requirements through a code of ethics, standards, guidelines, interpretation guides, and policies.
Legislation
Several acts and regulations, both provincial and federal, govern the practice of pharmacy in Newfoundland and Labrador, providing the parameters within which regulated pharmacy professionals practice and pharmacies operate
Code of Ethics
The Code of Ethics is the foundation for professional behaviour, actions, and attitudes, reflecting what the pharmacy profession stands for and reinforcing what is unique about the contribution pharmacy professionals make to patients, society, and their profession.
Standards
Standards are the minimum requirements established by the College for the practice of pharmacy and the operation of licensed pharmacies.
Guidelines
Guidelines provide guidance for pharmacy practice in the absence of defined legislation or standards of practice in the interest of safety, effectiveness, and appropriateness of patient care.
Interpretation Guides
Interpretation guides add detail and description to the Code of Ethics or portions of legislation.
Policies
Policies identify requirements that have not been established in legislation or bylaws.
