A preceptor is an experienced pharmacy professional who assumes responsibility for the activities of their assigned pharmacy intern or pharmacy technician intern during their time in the pharmacy and commits to evaluating their performance during the practical training period.
Apply for Authorization
Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians registered with the College of Pharmacy of Newfoundland and Labrador who wish to serve as preceptors can apply to do so through their account in the CPNL Registrant Portal.
Eligibility
Must be registered as a pharmacist or pharmacy technician with the College of Pharmacy of Newfoundland and Labrador in good standing with no restrictions on their practice.
Must be registered and practicing for at least 12 months and have reasonable experience to provide adequate familiarity with systems and patients.
Must have completed an acceptable preceptor education and training program within three years of application. Appropriate programs include but are not limited to:
Dalhousie University Preceptor Education Program
University of Alberta Preceptor Training
University of British Columbia E-Tips for Practice Education Course
University of Western Ontario Preceptor Education Program
Note: If the preceptor training program consists of multiple modules, proof of completion of all modules must be included with the application for authorization.
Required Documentation
The following documentation is required to be submitted with the Authorization to Serve as a Preceptor Application.
Proof of completion of approved preceptor education and training program.
Application
If you have determined you are eligible to apply for authorization and have obtained all the required documentation, you may apply through the College’s online registrant portal by following the steps below.
Click Registrant Portal in the Portal Login menu at the top right of the webpage.
Log into your account.
Click the Authorizations link on the side menu.
Click the Start New Application button under the Authorization Applications table.
Select the appropriate registration category from the Registration Type dropdown box.
Click the Select this Application button under the Serve as a Preceptor category.
Follow the instructions to submit the application.
Completed applications are reviewed in the order they are submitted and may take 5-7 business days to process once all required documentation is received. Applicants will be notified by email once a decision has been made.
