Authorization for Expanded Scope of Practice
There are practice areas within the NLPB Standards of Practice that require authorization from NLPB in order for pharmacists to be able to participate in that practice. Pharmacists interested in participating in any of these practice areas must complete and submit the appropriate application from the following list:
- Application for Authorization to Administer Drug Therapy by Inhalation or Injection
- Application for Authorization to Participate in Opioid Agonist Maintenance Treatment
- Application for Authorization to Prescribe
Authorization to Serve as a Preceptor
A preceptor is an experienced pharmacy professional who assumes responsibility for the activities of their assigned student, intern, or technician candidate during their time in the pharmacy and commits to evaluating their performance during the practical training period. Registrants applying for authorization to serve as a preceptor must have completed an NLPB-approved preceptor education and training program within three years of application. NLPB-approved programs include but are not limited to the following programs:
- Dalhousie University – Preceptor Education Program
- University of British Columbia – E-Tips for Practice Education Course
- University of Western Ontario – Preceptor Education Program
Registrants who have completed all requirements to serve as a preceptor can apply for authorization by completing and submitting the following application:
Authorization to be Designated Pharmacist-in-Charge
A pharmacist-in-charge is responsible for establishing and implementing policies and procedures for a given pharmacy and for ensuring that the pharmacy provides safe and quality services in accordance with the Pharmacy Act, 2012, Regulations, Standards of Pharmacy Operation, Standards of Practice, other applicable provincial and federal legislation, and any other requirements established by the Board. The duties of a pharmacist-in-charge are outlined in s.12 of the Pharmacy Regulations, 2014, which can be found under the Legislation page of this website.
Provincial legislation outlines conditions under which NLPB may designate a pharmacist-in-charge. Registrants applying for authorization to be designated pharmacist-in-charge must have completed the NLPB Pharmacist-in-Charge Education Program.
